Statement of Purpose:

Responsible for assisting with the day-to-day tasks of the summer sailing program. Skillfully apply the Club Rules and ensure safety for all sailors. Works collaboratively with the Sailing Instructors, Sailing Director and coaching staff for daytime activities and sailing instruction for campers. The Sailing Counsellor will assist the Instructors and Sailing Director in providing a fun experience and excellent services to Members of Key Biscayne Yacht Club Summer Camp.

Primary Duties:

· Assist with planning activities to ensure the safety and engagement of all sailors in their assigned groups.

· Assists with daily lesson plans and activities for campers based on abilities and ages and coordinates with the participants and parents.

· Follows program lesson plans and implementation plans in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of all campers.

· Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior, and understands positive youth development approaches.

· Communicates appropriately with parents and attends designated parent/family events.

· Assists with daily check-in/out of youth program sailors.

· Adheres to all required policies of KBYC and safety guidelines.

Education and Certificates:

· High school student

· Must be at least 15 years of age

· First Aid and CPR certified by either an AHA or Red Cross approved organisation

· US Sailing Level 1 Certification preferred (training weekend will be offered)

· FL Boaters License preferred

· Must be able to swim confidently

Experience:

· Previous experience working with students required.

· Experience in a formal sailing program or experience with boats desired.

· Experience working in similar club environment or program preferred

Skills:

Operational Skills

· Ability to understand Members’ needs and to deliver superior customer service.

· Ability to work long hours.

· Knowledge of boats and line handling.

· Ability to aid in the rigging and de-rigging of student boats, including helping lift boats off racks and stepping masts.

Communication Skills

· Ability to effectively communicate and use varying approaches with diverse personalities.

· Ability to communicate clearly with peers and superiors.

Language Skills

· Very good verbal and written communication skills in English.

· Verbal and written communication skills in Spanish is helpful.

Other:

· Ability to work in an outdoor environment in a hot climate.

· Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects up to 30 lbs or more frequently.

· Requires writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity.

· Ability to stand and/or walk long distances for an extended period of time, or for an entire work shift.

· Ability to perform mainly physical functions including walking about 6-8 miles a day.

· Available to work additional hours if required.
