4earth Lionfish Derby
In efforts to raise awareness on the Lionfish invasion destroying local reefs and native creatures in the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean, Miami Seaquarium is hosting a Lionfish Derby. The daylong derby invites fisherman to volunteer to catch lionfish and bring them back to Miami Seaquarium for scoring, data collection, and a community picnic. Cash prizes will be granted to the winners placing in the following categories: Most, largest and smallest. During the Derby, the lionfish will be cooked by community chiefs. While contestants are out fishing, Miami Seaquarium will host a community picnic filled with South Florida marine science and conservation vendors and workshops, including Lionfish jewelry making, music, and food.
