Sea Turtle Conservation in South Florida
Teal Kawana has been a project manager for Miami-Dade County’s Sea Turtle Conservation Program since 2016. She has over 10 years of experience in sea turtle conservation, having also worked 9 years as a Marine Turtle Specialist for the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program. During this time, she founded Sea Turtle Safe Lighting, LLC which helps residents of oceanfront properties bridge the gap between municipality code requirements and safety necessities with oceanfront lighting. Teal also worked for the Village of Key Biscayne as an Oceanfront Lighting and Marine Turtle Code Enforcement Officer, helping property owners comply with required sea turtle lighting restrictions and informing them of possible violations. She has a Master’s in Marine Biology from Nova Southeastern University in which her thesis focused on the effect of air temperature on the hatching success and incubation duration of loggerhead sea turtle clutches in Broward County. Refreshments will be served.
