Bike305/Parks Ride of Silence will commemorate cyclists involved in fatal crashes in Miami-Dade County over the years. The Ride of Silence is an annual international bicycle ride started in 2003 to commemorate cyclists killed and support those injured while riding on public roads. It helps to raise awareness among motorists, the public and decision makers of the dangers cyclists face on the roads, especially from other traffic. Miami-Dade has participated in this international event since 2005. The Ride of Silence is a tribute ride which will traverse and unite the globe (50 States, 48 countries, 7 Continents), it is a national event to honor those who have been injured or killed, to raise cycling awareness and to ask that we all share the road. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. On Wed. May 15th, 2024 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will traverse and unite the globe as nothing before it. Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured.
The cycling event will start and finish within the Crandon Park Marina. The police escorted cycling event will utilize the eastbound and westbound, inside (closest to the center median) vehicle travel lanes along the Crandon Boulevard, from Crandon Marina to Calusa Circle ( two loops). The bicycle ride will depart between 6:50- 7:00 p.m., from the Crandon Marina parking lot. The ride will take place with the Miami-Dade Police Department providing an escort type procession in marked squad cars. Once cyclists are cued up inside the marina parking lot, the MDPD will hold eastbound (inbound to Village of Key Biscayne (VKB)) vehicle traffic. Cyclists will turn right (eastbound toward the VKB) onto the roadway, merging to the inside inbound vehicle travel lane (lane closest to the center median), once the last cyclist is out, police will release vehicle traffic onto the outside vehicle travel lane (lane closest to the dedicated bike lane). Vehicle traffic traveling westbound (outbound to the mainland) from the VKB will be routed onto the outside vehicle travel lane (closest to the dedicated bike lane). Cyclists will follow the lead MDPD police vehicle on the inside inbound travel lane, turning at the Calusa Park circle (just past the fire station), traveling westerly (outbound towards the mainland) in the center inside lane to the Crandon Marina entrance. At this point cyclists will turn and complete a send loop, returning to the point of origin.
