The Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center welcomes you to their event featuring four guest speakers:
- Captain Franklin Adams. One of Marjory’s most trusted advisors and assistants, local native and legend, Franklin will regale us with tales from day-to-day dealings with Marjory and his later advocacy work to establish Big Cypress National Preserve and Fakahatchee State Preserve. He will be speaking at 10:00 A.M.
- Sofia Valiente, Photographer who captured the peoples of the lake (Okeechobee) and displayed a most unique traveling exhibit of said portraits on a scaled down paddle wheeled boat. Her talents have shared this other wised ignored population of Everglades She will be speaking at 11:00 A.M.
- Diliana Alexander, Executive Director, FilmGate. Miami Preservation of Historical Structures thru digital twin- time travel. See what they are doing with the digitization of Stiltsville. She will be speaking at noon.
- Tony Pernas, Runaway Train; The Battle for the Jet Port and the formation of Big Cypress National Preserve. It was the project that pivoted Marjory from a writer to an advocate and launched her fledgling group The Friends of the Everglades. Intended to be the world’s largest cargo industrial airport the only thing that took off was people’s collective resolve that we had a long way to go in protecting the Everglades. He will be speaking at 1:00 p.m.
Following the guest speakers, the Biscayne Nature Center then welcomes you to afternoon tea with Marjory Hats and High tea in honor of Marjory from 3pm-4pm. Don one of many stylized hats that Marjory liked to wear as you sip tea and enjoy small delicacies along watching Barbara Hedges bringing Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ spirit to life. Don’t forget your white gloves!
