SUMMARY:Sea Secrets - Human Presence in the Deep Ocean
DESCRIPTION:The third presentation of the 2011 Sea Secrets Lecture Series:\n\n \n\nFANTASY TO REALITY:\n\nHUMAN PRESENCE IN THE DEEP OCEAN \n\nBy\n\nBruce Strickrott\n\nExpedition Leader and Chief Pilot\, DSV ALVIN\n\n \n\n \n\nIn the famous novel\, 20\,000 Leagues Under the Sea of 1870\, Jules Verne expressed what many had dreamed: the ability to visit and explore the unknown depths of the ocean. Beginning in the 1930's\, the dream of deep ocean exploration has become a reality and led to thrilling discoveries at great depths. For more than a decade\, the leader in ocean floor exploration has been the deep diving research submersible ALVIN\, based at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Chief Pilot Bruce Strickrott has piloted 308 dives to hydrothermal vents\, cold seep communities\, undersea volcanoes\, seamounts and mid-ocean ridges around the globe. He will share what it is like to spend eight hours or more peering through ALVIN's viewports\, using robotic 'hands' or manipulators to sample animals and sea floor deposits\, and from time to time having those eureka moments of unexpected discovery. All events are free and open to the public\; however seating is limited.\n\n \n\nSEA SECRETS LECTURE SERIES\n\n Presented by the UM Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and The Ocean Research and Education Foundation\n\n WEDNESDAY\, MARCH 16\, 2011\n\n Reception begins at 5:30 p.m.\, followed by the lecture at 6:00 p.m.\n\nRosenstiel School Auditorium\n\n4600 Rickenbacker Causeway\, Virginia Key\, FL 33149\n\n \n\n All events are free and open to the public\; however seating is limited. \n\nGeneral admission seating\, no RSVP required.
