SUMMARY:Citizen Scientist Project Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Tom Jackson is a NOAA Research Fisheries Biologist. A resident of Key Biscayne while studying at RSMAS\, he received a Master of Science studying American Crocodiles in Hispanola. Since 2000\, Tom has worked at NOAA SEFSC on Virginia Key\, and will soon retire to Hawaii. He wears many hats at NOAA (invasive species is popular)\, but is focused on a multiyear\, cooperative study to document endangered smalltooth sawfish in Biscayne Bay. Historically\, smalltooth sawfish were a once common resident of the Bay and a good marker for habitat restoration. Along with Dr. Neil Hammerschlag\, head of the Shark Research Center at RSMAS\, Tom has spent 4 years on a monitoring project looking for acoustically tagged animals in the Bay to study population and behavior.\n\nRefreshments will be served.
