The Village's Art in Public Places Board invites the public to explore different aspects of the island with environmentally-focused artist Prudence Gill during three workshops on September 13, 20 and 27. Preregistration is required; call the Community Center at (305) 365-8900.
Gill, a Key Biscayne native, grew up on the Matheson Plantation and has a distinguished career as an artist and art curator/educator. This program complements the existing permanent art installations along Crandon Boulevard by further engaging participants with the island's natural environment (for a self-guided tour of the permanent installations, please visit www.ArtInKeyBiscayne.org).
These workshops, free and open to the public, are intended for adults and for teenagers accompanied by an adult. Teachers are encouraged to participate in these innovative learning experiences. Participants will meet at the Village Beach Park for Workshop #1 and the Community Center for Workshops #2 and #3.
For more information, please contact Prudence Gill at Prudence.Gill@gmail.com.
WORKSHOP #1: IN RESPONSE TO SITE - THE ISLAND'S SHORELINE
SEPTEMBER 13 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Meet at the Village Beach Park
One-day workshop along the shore of Key Biscayne. Participants will explore the aesthetic potential of the island's ocean side beach and dune, marine flora, and detritus. Found natural forms will be gathered to create temporary site-specific ephemeral interventions along the shore and for possible use in the sessions that will follow. Most of the time will be spent outdoors.
All participants should bring water bottle, sun screen, hat, walking stick, sketchbook, camera/phone. We will primarily be spending our time outdoors, please dress appropriately (shoes, bathing suits with cover shirts, shorts, hats, etc,). Be prepared to participate in physical activity, hiking, stooping, lifting, carrying, digging, walking, water contact/interaction.
WORKSHOPS #2 & #3: IN RESPONSE TO PLACE - ISLAND MEMORY
SEPTEMBER 20 & SEPTEMBER 27 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Meet at the Community Center
Workshops #2 and #3 are an exploration of observation and memory in mapping ones childhood relationship to nature and environment using photographs, text, drawing and collected materials as tools to create unique narratives of place. These hands-on workshops will encourage participants to complete creative projects using natural materials, found objects, and historic and contemporary images of the island environment. Through narrative building and process within collaborative and individual endeavors as a platform from which to begin, participants will have the opportunity, in either Workshop #2 or #3, to trace their autobiographical relationship to nature and place.
